[1 of the 6 tunes recorded in his apartment on his tape machine in 1959 - just 12 days before his death. The songs were posthumously produced and released in 1959. Cryin'... was the B-side to Peggy Sue Got Married. on Coral Records.]
[1962 hit for Booker T and the M.G.s - the greatest soul instrumental band ever! (Donald "Duck" Dunn on the bass! It was especially cool that they had 2 black and 2 white band members - making the first interracial group of the time.] • Loc • b
Comment:
Donald "Duck" Dunn was an incredible session musician for STAX - played with 60s cats like Elvis, Otis Redding, Albert King, Sam and Dave... Muddy Waters, Jerry Lee Lewis, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and later - around 1980 - with the Blues Brothers. He was also a record producer and songwriter and in the R&R HOF with Booker T and the MGs. He was playing in Tokyo with his guitarist buddy from the MGs, Steve Cropper, and was found dead after performing his fifth double show there with him in May of 2015. A huge loss.
Hmmm... I may have just talked myself into doing a DDD show....
[In Cleveland in 1972 was the first show Bowie played in the U.S.] • (1972)
Comment:
Said Bowie in a a 1973 Rolling Stone interview with William S. Burroughs, Ziggy Stardust is only the earthly messenger of the alien Starman, who brings a message of hope - even salvation - to Earth's youth through the radio. Ziggy is not an extraterrestrial.
The song has inspired interpretations ranging from an allusion to the "Second Coming of Christ", to an accurate prediction of the plot for the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977).
1972 was also the year that David announced his homosexuality in an interview in the British Mag "Melody Maker".
Melody Maker was the longest-running music weekly and one of the world's earliest. Founded in 1926 by Lawrence Wright, edited by Edgar Jackson their parent company in 2000 merged with sister company, IPC Media, and shut down the Melody Maker in favor of the merged mag, New Musical Express. Sad, kinda like losing the Phoenix, or selling the Globe....or taking away music writers' jobs....
