Their 1st four albums had critical success but modest sales, and they were on the verge of breaking up by early 1972, when David Bowie (a big fan) offered them several of his songs; they rejected 'Suffragate City', but recorded 'All The Young Dudes', which became their signature song. Hunter left to go solo in Dec 1974; his best-known songs are 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy (later covered by Great White), and Cleveland Rocks", one of the theme songs of TV series 'The Drew Carey Show.' ... Gordon Lightfoot died May 1st, at age 84. He has been referred to many times as Canada's greatest songwriter. Robbie Robertson (of the Band) described him as "a national treasure". Bob Dylan called him one of his favorite songwriters and said, "I can't think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don't like. Every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever.... ". Lightfoot was a featured musical performer at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Born as 'Edward Fluri', last day of June, 1943. In 1963, he began writing songs with Bob Crewe; later that year, Crewe needed a fourth song for a recording session with Diane Renay. "Navy Blue," which Rambeau co-wrote, became her first and biggest hit record early in 1964, hitting the Top Ten. He also co-wrote the follow-up, 'Kiss me Sailor'. // In 1965, Rambeau heard the single "Concrete and Clay" that Bob Crewe had brought back from a visit to England, by Unit 4 + 2. Dynovoice (Crewe's label) rush-released Rambeau's version, which became his first and biggest hit (#35/ 05-65).

The songwriter, Harry Nilsson, was born in June of 1941. His late 1967 debut album 'Pandemonium Shadow Show' came to the attention of The Beatles, after their press offficer Derek Taylor bought an entire box to give away to promote Nilsson; his medley 'You Can't Do That' may be considered the first "mash up". He was closely associated with Kate Bush, and toured and recorded with many artists, including Peter Gabriel, Scott Walker, Eric Clapton, Annie Lennox, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Phil Collins, Simple Minds, Al Green, Jon Anderson (Yes) and Mavis Staples ... ALSO ... Georgie Fame (b. "Clive Powell") was born in June of 1943. In 1961 he played piano for Billy Fury in his backing band, the Blue Flames. When the band was fired at the end of the year, he took it over and it was re-billed as "Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames ". He was very successful in London clubs such as The Flamingo Club. He had 13 chart singles in England in the 1960s, including three #1 hits. He has since played with Alan Price, Van Morrison and Bill Wyman.

Actor, singer George Maharis died May 24, at age 94. He is probably best known for playing 'Buzz Murdoch' in the first 3 years of the TV show 'Route 66'. His biggest hit was with standard 'Teach Me Tonight' (#25/ 06-62). He was also in the films 'Exodus', 'Splendor In The Grass' and 'Sylvia'. Later in his life he became an impressionist painter.

Acoustic bassist, band leader and composer Bill Lee died May 24th, at age 94. He played on the recordings of dozens of artists, such as: Simon and Garfunkel, Duke Ellington, Carmen McRae,Billie Holiday, Harry Belafonte, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, Billy Strayhorn, Peter, Paul and Mary, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Burt Bacharach, Carolyn Hester, John Lee Hooker, Odetta, Mamas & Papas, Tom Rush, Tom Paxton and Josh White. He was with Pilot till 1977. He also played with The Alan Parsons Project (1975 - 1990) and on 5 albums by Kate Bush. Ron Altbach died Feb 21st, age 76. He was the keyboard player in the group, which formed in Ithaca, NY in 1969. He played the very distinctive Wurlitzer electric piano intro to this. The group was part of the Brazilian "Tropicalia" artistic movement in the late 1960s, musically this was combining Brazilian rhythms with American/ British Popular music and Psychedelia. She went solo in late 1972 - her 1975 album 'Fruto Proibido' was the best-selling Brazilian Rock and Roll ever at the time, and she was called "The Queen of Rock". // * Also - this album was ranked #12 on 'Mojo' magazine's list of "The 50 Most Out-There Albums of All Time", and listed at # 9 on Rolling Stone magazine's "10 Greatest Latin Rock Albums of All Time".

Bjorn Thelin, the original bass player in The SPOTNICKS (1961 - 1967, returned 1973 - 1978) was born in June of 1942 / The Spotnicks wore futurist space suits on stage, and also pioneered the use of wireless electric instruments onstage. Larry Hall, born in June of 1940, is mostly known as a "one-hit wonder" for his rockaballad hit "Sandy" (#15/ 11-59). He won five Swedish Gyllene Skivan {"Golden Disc"} awards, given out by the oldest Swedish Jazz magazine; the only person to won this award five times.

Pete Brown died May 19th, at age 82. Originally a poet (and touring as "The First Real Poetry Band", with John McLaughlin), he is best known for writing with Jack Bruce some songs that Cream recorded ('White Room', I Feel Free', 'Wrapping Paper', 'Dance The Night away' and 'SWLABR), also 'Sunshine Of Your Love' with Clapton. After Cream's break-up, he Bruce continued to write together for Bruce's solo albums. He also had a singing career - after 'Pete Brown And His Battered Ornaments' (1968 - 1969) he formed 'Pete Brown And Piblokto! (1969 - 1971)'. / He also wrote film scripts.
