From a tribute album featuring the music of French singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, released by Tzadik Records as part of their series on "Radical Jewish Culture." Gainsbourg epitomized the 1960s French intellectual’s objectification of women and colonialist mythologizing of Africans. This song was released on Gainsbourg’s 1964 album, Gainsbourg Percussions. Here’s an interesting history of that. This version of the song by Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, featuring vocals and accordion by Brooklyn-based composer Olivier Glissant, recasts and reclaims the song.
