Taken from a short film, it’s a story by E.B. White (who also narrates) telling the story of a Maine Lobsterman in the 1950's, back when lobster traps were wooden, lobsters were kept in bushel baskets and the price was right around .30 per pound. This excerpt features Eugene (Gene) Eaton on his lobster boat _Nor Wester_ off the coast of Deer Isle. The film explains the entire lobstering process, and shows Eaton selling his 200lbs of lobsters to Heanssler for $60 which was considered a _day when you get ahead._ - click link to watch (perhaps after today's show)
Group from Llanfyllin, UK made up of Sioned Camlin - Drums/Percussion Rob Harrison - Saxophone/Recorder/Whistle/Guitar Jack Hunter - Bass/Keys/Recorder/Vocals David Thomas - Guitar/Cello/Vocals. Much of their work is improvisational. They derived their name from a magician. From wiki: Mascot Moth was considered by English magician David Devant (b.1868–d.1941) to be his masterpiece, which he created in 1905. In full view of the audience and in the center of a lighted stage, a lady (dressed in a moth-like costume) disappears as soon as the conjurer attempts to grasp the her. She immediately vanishes out of sight as she folds her wings in, although the figure is not concealed in any way during the illusion. Click link to watch Devan performing another magic trick.
In a 1982 letter to Irwin Chusid, Corwood (label aka likely Jandek) says the singer on this track is Nancy’s sister Pat. Not sure who Nancy is. This taken off Jandek's first release, and notable for the track “Nancy Sings” which features the first appearance by an outside vocalist on a Jandek record. There are other (rare) appearances by women/singers, and all seem to be named Nancy. Thanks to DJ Tapedeck Tommy whose show Box of Maniacs airs on Mondays @ 6pm on WMBR. Never had heard of Jandek before!

Came up in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance to a musical family. Zachary, his grandfather, was a flamenco guitarist and Spanish-American War veteran. His father William was a stride pianist. Bud became a friend of fellow jazz pianist Elmo Hope during his childhood. Powell and Hope performed hymns and Bach compositions for Hope's mother, who had a piano at her home, but also experimented with harmonic ideas such as flattened fifths. A severe beating by police in 1945 and years of electroconvulsive therapy treatments adversely impacted his mental health. He suffered constant pain from his head wounds and turned to alcohol to relieve the pain, as a result developing an addiction that would haunt him for the rest of his life. - wiki There were many more incidents of great suffering -- incarceration, commitment to mental institutions, improper/over-medicating. He continued to perform, and found some guardian angels along the way. Wiki goes on to say that Powell's recordings and live performances with Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, and Max Roach during the late 1940s and early 1950s were instrumental in shaping modern jazz piano technique."

"Jandek is the musical project of Sterling Smith, a Houston, Texas-based American lo-fi folk singer. Since 1978, Jandek has independently released over 120 albums while granting an interview extremely rarely and providing no biographical information, releasing on a self-made label, _Corwood Industries_.[] Jandek often plays an idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, frequently using an open and unconventional chord structure.[3] AllMusic has described Jandek as _the most enigmatic figure in American music. - wiki. On October 17, 2004, at Glasgow, Scotland's Instal Festival (an annual event celebrating experimental music), a tall, slender man in a dark grey shirt, black slacks, and a fedora walked onto the stage and began performing with bassist Richard Youngs and drummer Alex Neilson. While the artist was not announced and he was not identified in the program, word quickly spread that Jandek had made his first documented live appearance at the event, which was later confirmed by fellow Instal participants. - Allmusic (see link)"

This is the first recorded song of Bjork, inspired by Tina Charles (born Tina Hoskins; 10 March 1954) an English singer who achieved success as a disco artist in the mid to late 1970s. This was Charles' most successful single... it was a UK no. 1 hit in 1976. As for Bjork, she sang this for a school recital and according to Laughing Squid, the “teachers were so impressed with her voice, they sent the recording to the national radio station where it received a great deal of play.” Soon thereafter (in 1977) came her first album, featuring cover art provided by her mom. - OpenCulture.com (click link for more)
